Are you suffering through Menopause?
Menopause is the cessation of menstruation in older women and the average age of onset is around 51. Common complaints include hot flushes, night sweats, headaches, atrophic vaginitis, frequent urinary tract infections, cold hands and feet, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, mood swings, bloating, food intolerances and anxiety.
6-12months without a menstrual period is the commonly accepted rule of diagnosing menopause and the time prior referring to as ‘perimenopause’ and the time after is ‘post menopause’. Many women can state to experience the above symptoms not only during menopause but also during peri and post menopause.
Some conventional doctors still see menopause as a disease rather than a normal physiological process. In contrast, many cultures view menopause as natural process (which it is) and also a positive event in a woman’s life. This may not be feeling like a positive event in your life right now! Herbs can greatly assist this change in a woman’s biological process. It is almost as though herbs were designed to support and nourish women while their body makes these normal, biological changes.
In the past, many women were prescribed HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), until studies showed an increase in breast cancer risk, particularly with long term use of HRT. There are many healthier alternatives using herbs with no side effects.
As a Naturopath, we are seeing more and more women who are suffering through menopause. This may be related to the high stress levels women’s bodies are now under with any working fulltime while still running the household and looking after children. This results in a woman running on adrenaline and exhausting her adrenal glands, which links in with the thyroid, and the thyroid controls hormones in the body. Hence, we are also seeing a thyroid epidemic with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimotos and Graves’ disease.
During menopausal time are also seeing the cholesterol increase while the body tries to produce more hormones. We are seeing this with women who have had a long term, vegan, and organic diet and therefore know that this increase in cholesterol is not just dietary related.
At my clinic we can review any existing blood pathology as well as request blood tests, and also have an in clinic blood pathology equipment to test, TSH, T4 (thyroid testing), Cortisol (adrenals), FSH, LH and testosterone (hormones for looking at menopause). These tests are done through a finger prick of blood with the same accuracy as a blood test and results are within 10 minutes.
We also look at urine biochemistry and can assist with detecting urinary tract infections as well as low grade infections. We can also give you access to checking for food intolerance testing.
Please note that self-prescribing herbs and supplements can be dangerous and often money can be spent on incorrect formulations that may not produce results and also put your body at further risk.
Receive your advice from a suitably well-educated health practitioner and if you are receiving advice from anyone who has not studied extensively in the area of Natural Medicine you will not be receiving educated advice. Natural medicine research is also continually changing as are products and it is important to ensure you are speaking with someone who is keeping updated with these changes in research.
